Does life ever confuse you? Do you find it hard to make sense of things?
This week I was puzzling over something. My husband has a part time ministry (that I help him with) as well as having a regular job. He would love to be able spend more time on this ministry, and I pray for that. But lately he's had extra work which has kept him very busy, and I've been sick. So he's had to spend less time than usual on his ministry and I haven't been much help either. That doesn't make sense to me. Why does work get busier and I get sick when we're wanting to be more involved in ministry? Why do we have less time when we're wanting more time?
But as I was thinking and praying about this, the story of Gideon came to mind. I read this story with the children awhile ago. Gideon was chosen by God to rescue Israel from the Midianites who were like grasshoppers in number. Gideon had 32,000 soldiers. But God said, That's too many! God decreased his army down to...300! And they won the battle in an amazing way. They didn't even have to fight. (Judges 7)
"And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me...." Judges 7:2
Although God explained the reason to Gideon, I wonder if Gideon found it a little puzzling.
We often think we need more when God thinks we need less. When we have less, we have to be dependent on God because there's no other way we're going to do it.
God doesn't need us to have more or much. He needs us to trust and obey Him. Then He'll do amazing things.
It works the other way around too. Sometimes we think we need less. Less trials, less problems, less work, less sickness, less responsibilities, less stress etc. And instead we are given more!
We can trust God to give us what we need, whether it's more or less. What we really need is MORE of God!
