On Monday I brought a small box of apples especially for children. Nice little apples. On Tuesday I noticed that nearly every apple had a rotten spot on it. I was annoyed as I had paid a good amount for them. When a little part of the apple is rotten, usually the whole apple tastes yuck. So I thought I might have to throw them all away. What a waste! But in the end I tried out a new basic muffin recipe and added in some cinnamon and the good parts of the apples, grated. They taste delicious! As I was enjoying one with a hot drink I thought about how the rotten apples had been turned into something delicious. Without rotten parts on the apples, I would never had made muffins. Romans 8:28 came to mind.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
We all have things happen that seem a little rotten. Things that annoy or upset us and we don't quite know what to do with. Right now I have anemia. I have been on iron supplements for 3 weeks. A week ago I told my husband, "I feel SO much better. So much happier. And it's so nice to drive again without being afraid." But I spoke a little too soon. The last week I have been feeling sick and dizzy off and on. This week I was supposed to take Lydia to a hospital appointment down by Wellington, and I had to postphone it for a second time because I don't feel safe driving that far. I am sick of feeling sick. I would rather my life be completely free from all rotten bits. But God is the master Chef. He has a way of turning our rotten things into something beautiful. Something we would never have without some rottenness. Something we never planned for just like I planned for apples, not muffins. But when they're given to God, He'll make something better. It's up to us to bring all our troubles to Him and trust Him to work them out for our good. We can rejoice that He is the One in charge and He is Good. Otherwise our rotten bits will just make us bitter and miserable.
So what way will you view your trials? As rotten apples or delicious muffins? I'll go with the muffins!
